PIXIE and Apple Home #
PIXIE plugs into the Apple ecosystem through Siri Shortcuts, set up directly from the PIXIE PLUS app. Here is how it works, what makes it different from Google Home and Amazon Alexa, and how to make the most of it in a real household.
PIXIE works with Apple via Siri Shortcuts. Not as a native HomeKit accessory. #
PIXIE is not a HomeKit-certified accessory. The Apple integration runs through Siri Shortcuts, which is Apple's voice automation framework, and the setup happens inside the PIXIE PLUS app and takes seconds per scene. Once a shortcut is created on a device, every Apple device signed in to the same Apple ID can use the voice command immediately.
This is genuinely different from Google Home and Amazon Alexa, where voice setups are account-wide and shared across the household. With Siri Shortcuts, the household does not have to settle on a single set of voice phrases; every member can use their own.
Four steps. Inside the app you already use. #
The whole flow lives inside the PIXIE PLUS app. There is nothing to configure outside it, no separate skill or driver to enable, and no integration credentials to manage.
Create a scene in PIXIE PLUS #
Set the lights, fans, blinds, and any connected AC to the levels and states you want for that moment. Name the scene clearly: "Lounge dinner", "Bedroom dim", "Movie time". The scene name will become the natural anchor for your spoken phrase.
Tap the Siri icon inside the scene #
The PIXIE PLUS app has a Siri icon on every scene. Tapping it hands the scene to Siri and automates the configuration of the corresponding Siri Shortcut. There is no manual setup required in the Shortcuts app.
Choose your spoken phrase #
Apple's Shortcuts app prompts for the trigger phrase. Pick whatever sounds natural in the household: "Hey Siri, dinner mode", "Hey Siri, lounge bright", "Hey Siri, movie time". The phrase is yours to customise.
Use it from any Apple device #
The shortcut is now available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, HomePod, and CarPlay. Every Apple device signed in to the same Apple ID can call the scene by voice immediately.
Per-device setup. Personal voice control. #
Siri Shortcuts are tied to the Apple ID and the device. That sounds like extra setup at first glance, and on a strict five-minute reading it is, but the practical effect in a real household is genuinely better. Every member sets up the shortcuts that matter to them, in the language they actually use, on the devices they actually carry. Family members can name the same scene differently, and nobody has to argue about which phrase the home should respond to.
The same scene, three different voice phrases. #
One person says "Hey Siri, lounge for movie." Their partner says "Hey Siri, cinema time." A teenager says "Hey Siri, movie." All three call the same PIXIE scene. None of them had to compromise on what felt natural to say.
The difference worth knowing before you set up. #
Google Home and Amazon Alexa take a different approach to voice control over PIXIE. The biggest practical difference shows up when you want to call a specific brightness level by voice.
| Google Home / Alexa | Siri Shortcuts | |
|---|---|---|
| Voice control method | Direct device control. Voice commands talk to individual lights, fans, and devices by name. | Scene-based shortcuts. Voice commands trigger PIXIE scenes you have already created in the app. |
| Specific light levels | "Lounge at 50%" works directly, with no scene setup required. | Requires a pre-built scene named "Lounge 50%" or similar. The scene is the unit of voice control. |
| Setup scope | Account-wide. One household-shared set of phrases serves the whole home. | Per device, per Apple ID. Personal to each user, customised in their own words. |
| Where it lives | Inside the Google Home app or Alexa app, with cloud account integration. | Inside the Apple Shortcuts app on each device, set up from PIXIE PLUS in one tap. |
| Native ecosystem accessory | PIXIE works as a connected service, surfaced through the Google or Alexa account. | Not a HomeKit accessory. The integration runs through Siri Shortcuts. |
Name scenes the way you would speak about them. #
Because Siri Shortcuts trigger from a phrase you choose, the scene name in PIXIE PLUS is the foundation of the voice experience. A few naming patterns work well in practice; most homes settle on a mix of all three.
Moments #
The everyday scenes most homes settle into. Easy to remember, easy to say, easy for guests to pick up.
Specific levels #
For households who want voice control at specific brightness or fan settings. The scene name carries the level so the phrase stays short.
Rooms and zones #
Clean, scoped commands that tell Siri exactly which part of the home to act on. Useful when several rooms have similar scene types.
Yes to Siri today. Yes to native Apple Home through the Matter pathway. #
Siri Shortcuts is the working integration today, and for most households it is enough. When the Matter pathway lands for PIXIE, the same installed system will be exposable to native Apple Home through a Matter bridge, with no rewiring or hardware replacement. Buyers who set up Siri Shortcuts now do not lose anything when that pathway becomes available; the shortcuts continue to work alongside any future native Apple Home control.
The voice ecosystem, set out properly. #
Voice control is one part of the broader smart home picture. The Smart Home Explained editorial series and the related support docs cover the rest of the architecture in plain language for electricians and the homeowners they advise.
